Vegevent wows the crowds

ASPIRING gardeners flocked to a new event in Fordingbridge on Saturday. The Vegevent, run by the Fordingbridge Transition Group, attracted more than 100 people with a host of vegetable related activities including a seed swap and a talk by gardening author Charles Dowding about no-dig gardening. Blight resistant seed potatoes were one of many items for sale and a cookery demonstration focussed on various vegetable dishes such as braised swede, spicy potato and cauliflower, pea pakoras, Jerusalem artichoke soup and root rosti. The Vegevent stew, in particular, proved to be a great success. The day raised about £350, which will go to help the group, made up entirely of volunteers, to run other events. A harvest event in the autumn will be aiming to help people make the best of what they have grown in terms of storage and preserving.

The transition group aims to encourage a move away from dependency on oil and towards sustainability. It encourages the use of local resources and growing your own whenever possible.
